Common Chandelier Installation Mistakes That Cause Flicker, Buzzing, or Loose Fixtures
If your chandelier flickers, buzzes, or feels slightly loose, don’t ignore it. These issues are often caused by installation shortcuts, and they can become safety problems over time.
Mistake 1: Using the wrong dimmer for LED
Many chandeliers are fitted with LED bulbs or have built-in LED drivers. Using an incompatible dimmer often causes buzzing, flicker, or limited dimming range. The correct fix is selecting a dimmer rated for that LED load and driver type.
Mistake 2: Loose connections inside the canopy
Loose terminal screws or poor twisting/taping can cause intermittent power and heat. Proper connectors and a clean wiring layout reduce strain and improve reliability.
Mistake 3: Anchoring into gypsum only
Even if it feels “tight” at first, gypsum anchors can loosen with vibration, door slams, or time. Structural mounting is the correct approach.
Mistake 4: No strain relief on the cable
Wiring should never carry weight. Without strain relief, small movements can pull connections and cause flicker.
When to call an installer
- The chandelier moves when the AC is running or doors close.
- Flicker happens on certain brightness levels.
- You smell warmth or see discoloration near the canopy.
A professional inspection can usually diagnose these issues quickly and make the setup safe again.
